"I was definitely happy with how the first race went," he said. "I'm also very happy to be back here in British Superbikes.
"I had a bit of trouble with the tyres and the bike was sometimes a bit hard to control.
"It's still a new bike, a new motorcycle, and I need to do some more laps on it.
"I'm looking forward to the next race but Thruxton is not my favourite track, it's too fast for me."
Fellow HM Plant Honda rider Josh Brookes' race weekend was also peppered with highs and lows.
He headed to the Kent circuit as one of the pre-season title favourites having finished fourth overall last year despite only completing 13 races due to a combination of suspensions and visa problems.
But he struggled to produce the goods – qualifying in fifth but not managing to improve on that to end race one in the same position.
The new rules for 2010 meant the Aussie started the second race in pole position – having registered the fastest lap time in the day's opening race – but Brookes failed to capitalise on that advantage, crashing out on lap 11.
