The cost of electric is heavily subsidized by the government in China through the state-owned company State Grid. There seems to be a myth about electric motors for use in cars and bikes. They are about 14 times less efficient than their gas powered counter parts. Electric motors are a great idea for reducing pollution if you are using hydro or solar electric. Throughout China, coal is used for power. The electric is produced by changing chemical energy (burning coal) to mechanical energy (turning the turbine) and finally to electrical energy. Then the AC electric is transmitted long distances through an inefficient power grid. Finally the AC electric is converted to DC when it charges the battery. No matter how efficient your system is the laws of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics show that you will lose a huge amount (about 80-90%) of energy when you change energy from one form to another. At the end you will be left with a fraction of a percent of the original energy in the coal!
