And even if you utter those words, watch what you sign -- to make sure something didn't wriggle into the contract that you didn't want, says Jack Gillis, spokesman for the Consumer Federation of America and the author of The Car Book.
"At the end of a transaction, you're emotionally exhausted, and you're handed a sheaf of papers and you sign," said Gillis. "One of the things consumers face is that at that point in the transaction they just want to get out of there, and that really works to the dealer's advantage."
Gap or "guaranteed asset protection" insurance isn't necessarily a bad thing -- it's useful if you're heavily financing a car, and you total it soon after the purchase. Regular car insurance won't always cover the cost of the loan, and gap covers what regular insurance won't.
But you shouldn't pay for gap insurance if it's added when you didn't ask for it, but sometimes it ends up in the contract anyway, consumer advocates say.
"Consumers aren't paying attention in some instances," said Steve Bernas, president of the Chicago area Better Business Bureau.
